Magnum P.I. was a show made memorable to fans for a whole host of reasons.
There was the titular detective’s adorable pair of Dobermans, his signature red Ferrari and his back-and-forth relationship with sidekick Higgins.
There was also the show’s stunning Hawaii setting and the glorious sight of Tom Selleck, a hairy man mountain in the prime of his life.
Women loved him, men wanted to be him and everyone agreed one thing was certain: he was in possession of the world’s best moustache.
So, when news broke that a reboot was on the way, starring the watchable Jay Hernandez, fans were sceptical.
After all, how do you better what was one of the best and most enjoyable shows of the 1980s? Especially without the ever-watchable Selleck.
The results remain to be seen but Peter Lenkov, one of the producers behind the reboot, has revealed that one key ingredient will be missing: that moustache.
According to Lenkov, that was one particular aesthetic only Selleck brought to the role and it’s one they won’t be attempting to replicate.
Though there will be a “nod” to the ‘tache in the second episode of the show, that will be about it for ‘tache stuff.
Selleck could yet make an appearance of course but, given that he’s largely clean shaven these days, it won’t be quite the same.
Will a tache-less Hernandez be able to recapture the same old magic? The show debuts on September 24th.
