It is exactly 40 years to the day since a Czechoslovakian attacking midfielder by the name of Antonin Panenka wrote his name into football history with a very unique penalty.
Coming at the end of a thrilling European Championship final back in 1976 against a heavily-fancied West Germany, Panenka was the man entrusted with securing the title for the Czechs with the decisive spot-kick in the shootout.
Having shaped to shoot into the corner, Panenka proceeding to dink the ball down the middle of the goal, sending Sepp Maier the wrong way and securing the Czech’s first and only major piece of silverware.
In the years since, plenty of players have attempted the same Panenka penalty trick and while there have been plenty of success stories along the way, it is always far more amusing when it goes wrong.
Here are five names you would not have expected to see try and fail. Miserably.
Gary Lineker vs Brazil
Lineker was one goal short of equaling Bobby Charlton’s England record when he stepped up to take this spot-kick in a friendly against Brazil. What followed was almost too horrible to watch. Almost…
Neymar vs EC Vitoria
As if Neymar, had not angered Esporte Clube Vitoria fans enough by clearly diving for a penalty, he then proceeded to take the piss even further with a Panenka. Fortunately it was a shocking effort.
Franceso Totti vs Lecce
The architect of many a fine Panenka penalty, with Totti’s most notable effort coming at Euro 2000, the Italian showed that even the very best are fallible to a crap spot kick attempt every now and then.
Alexandre Pato vs Gremio
Loaded is not sure which is worse: that Pato’s abysmal Panenka effort knocked Corinthians out of the 2013 Copa do Brasil or that it came against Dida, a goalkeeper already well into his 40s.
Cristiano Ronaldo vs Copenhagen
While there was something rather unfortunate about Ronaldo’s penalty miss against Austria at Euro 2016, this truly terrible Panenka is pure ego from the Portuguese – who would have thought it?
