It’s one thing for a football team to be intimidated by opposition fans, or to face criticism from their own supporters, but the Legia Warsaw first-team squad faced something altogether different and far more alarming after losing to rivals Lech Poznan.

Encounters between Legia and Poznan tend to be pretty intense affairs, with the match amounting to a derby in Poland to rival Spain’s El Clasico encounter between Barcelona and Real Madrid.

So when Legia Warsaw went down 3-0 to Lech Poznan, most players probably expected to come in for strong criticism from their own supporters.

What they could never imagine though was that the club’s hardcore, ultra fans would have something much worse in mind for them.

According to reports coming out of Poland, the defeated team arrived back at the Polish Army Stadium to be greeted by a group of 50 hooligans.

The players were asked to disembark the coach and duly do so, thinking that little more than a stern talk was ahead of them.

Instead, they were almost immediately attacked with Polish news sources claiming the hooligans hit the back of their heads and slapped them across the face.

The attack was not designed to injure any of the players but rather intimidate and humiliate them. There was allegedly worse in store for assistant manager Aleksandar Vukovic though, who was supposedly punched as part of the attack.

Manager Romeo Jozak remained unharmed during the 10-minute attack, though it did end allegedly with a warning: “If you play the same way next game, we’ll come again.”

Legia Warsaw are the reigning Polish champions, having won back-to-back Ekstraklasa titles. They currently sit eighth after a difficult start to the season but remain just six points off top spot and five points behind Lech Poznan.
