Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 just released a brand new trailer and it features a very special Marvel debut – Kurt Russell has joined the universe.

The last time we left the rascally guardians, Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord had just discovered he was half alien, and his father was still out there.

Now it seems, we know exactly who his daddy is – Russell’s characters name is Ego, the Living Planet. He’s a well-known figure in the comic series. Ego is quite literally a walking planet, who was created after a science experiment by the Stranger.

According to the comics, his brother Alter-Ego is being held by The Collector who is played by Benicio Del Toro in the GOT franchise.Ego also has an association with Thor; we’ll see if these storylines make it into the sequel. We hope so.

Though the mysterious Ego appears briefly at the end of the trailer, it makes quite an impression. We’re lucky to see him as well, considering it almost didn’t happen according to director James Gunn.

Fox originally owned the rights to the character and wanted to use him in the first Deadpool movie. Since James Gunn assumed Marvel already held Stan Lee’s Ego, he built the script around him. The studio then scrambled and bought back the rights to the character from Fox just in time.

Gunn discussed this colossal mistake on his Facebook, “I had no backup plan, and it would be nearly impossible to just drop another character in. Thank God Fox came to us and wanted to make a trade.”

Phew. Despite this close-call, the film is done, and we’re starting to see why it got the highest audience score in Marvel’s history. Between Baby Groot and Snake Plissken, April 28th can’t come fast enough.

It should be noted that this is Russell’s first foray into the sci-fi genre in awhile, at least since his Stargate days. He looks right at home in James Gunn’s alien environment.

Fuck yes!
