Some planets just don’t have any luck.

Superman’s homeworld looks destined to explode once again with the news that Syfy is working on a TV pilot about Krypton.

The show will centre on Superman’s grandfather – or, the dad of Russell Crowe’s Jor-El – and how he’s forced to redeem the name of the House of El as the planet faces destruction.

Man Of Steel writer David S Goyer is the mastermind behind it. Based on his track record – Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight films = good / Batman v Superman = bad – this could go either way.

“Krypton is one of the most iconic stories in the comic book universe,” said Bill McGoldrick of Syfy’s TV owners NBC.

“In the talented hands of David S. Goyer and the DC Entertainment/Warner Horizon Television team, this exciting Syfy project will take viewers back to Superman’s home to show how the timeless legend began.”

Could Goyer’s Man Of Steel pave the way for a future cameo from Crowe? He previously pitched in with an idea for a prequel movie that sounds exactly like the Syfy project.

“I’d like to see what made Jor-El Jor-El, what made him and Zod legendarily or folklorically friends,” he told MTV. “What split them apart? The philosophy that spilt them up. So, a prequel.”

Superman has been a familiar face on TV screens since the 1950 serial with George Reeves. Since then there’s been Dean Cain’s The New Adventures Of Superman, Smallville and a recent off-shoot Supergirl, which is on screens now.
