Kaley Cuoco’s latest movie role, in the upcoming James Franco and Bryan Cranston comedy Why Him?, ranks among her funniest to date – but fans of the Big Bang Theory star could still be left disappointed.
The 31-year-old has mostly shied away from the big screen, with her most notable roles in recent years including the Kevin Hart comedy The Wedding Ringer and an independent movie called Burning Bodhi.
Much of this has to do with the punishing Big Bang Theory filming schedule, a show that has helped Cuoco become one of the highest paid TV stars in the world earning $1 million an episode.
However, with the actress evidently beginning to think about life beyond the Big Bang, a major role in Why Him? could be a game changer.
There is just one small catch though.
Essentially a re-run of the Robert De Niro/James Franco comedy Meet The Parents, this movie sees doting father Ned Fleming (Bryan Cranston) going up against tech billionaire Laird Mayhew (James Franco), who wants to marry his daughter.
It’s within Laird’s high tech home that most of the movie’s hijinks take place and where Cuoco’s surprise role comes into play.
Evidently inspired by Amazon Alexa, Cuoco takes on the role of Justine, Laird’s in-home artificial intelligence system.
It’s a part that provides plenty of laughs though, much to the disappointment of Cuoco’s legion of fans it’s also a role that sees her get exactly zero minutes of screen time.
A hilarious send-up of the Amazon system, this could prove to be Cuoco might just be the best thing about this knockabout comedy – the only real shame is that she’s nowhere to be seen.
Still, Scarlett Johansson did wonderful things in Her and then there’s always 2001: A Space Odyssey’s Hal.
Why Him? hits UK cinemas on December 26.
