Former Daily Show host Jon Stewart returned to late-night TV in the US this week for an explosive rant on the state of US politics.
Stewart reunited with old Comedy Central colleague Stephen Colbert on The Late Show for a skit revolving around the pair’s disbelief over Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.
But last night’s appearance from Stewart was something different entirely. Stewart took over Colbert’s slot and showed viewers he’s mad as hell and not going to take this anymore.
His post-Republican National Convention monologue was an explosive takedown of Trump, right-leaning broadcasters Fox News and their controversial, Trump-loving host Sean Hannity.
“This country isn’t yours! You don’t own it! It never was!”
The best bit of the 10-minute was probably Stewart’s highlighting the hypocrisy of Hannity (Stewart brands him “Lumpy”), who frequently called out President Obama for elitism and divisiveness but lets Trump off the hook for the same thing.
Stewart mentioned Hannity’s questioning of Obama’s Christianity, then noted how the Fox loudmouth took offence when the Pope dared to attack Trump’s faith.
“Either Lumpy and his friends are lying about being bothered by thin-skinned authoritarian less-than-Christian readers of prompter being president, or they don’t care, as long as it’s their thin-skinned prompter authoritarian tyrant narcissist,” Stewart observed.
“You just want that person to give you your country back because you feel that you’re this country’s rightful owners. The only problem with that, this country isn’t yours! You don’t own it! It never was!
“There is no real America! You don’t own it! You don’t own patriotism, you don’t own Christianity, you sure as hell don’t own respect for the brave and sacrifice of military, police and firefighters! Trust me!”
