Joaquin Phoenix has signed on the dotted line to star in a Batman spin-off movie focusing on the Dark Knight’s most iconic arch-nemesis, the Joker.
Phoenix has been in the frame to take on the role of the Clown Prince Of Crime for several months, despite Jared Leto’s likely return to the role in Suicide Squad 2.
This will be a markedly different and hopefully vastly superior take on the character though, with Phoenix perfectly primed for the role.
Anyone who saw his standout turn in the Lynne Ramsey thriller You Were Never Really Here will know the Oscar winner is more than capable of living up to the part of the crazed criminal.
It’s shaping up to be an intriguing project all round with Todd Philips, who is best known for comedies like The Hangover, directing and co-writing the film.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film is being described as “exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.”
Scott Silver co-wrote the script with Warner Bros. keen for the film to take a markedly different approach to any previous comic book superhero movies.
The film’s $55m budget will give things a more indie feel but will also allow for more experimentation, with the film likely to be among the darkest superhero effort to ever emerge in mainstream cinema.
It’s not all good news for Joker fans though – Jared Leto is apparently developing his own solo Joker movie.
