Jimmy Carr is a comedian known for pushing the boundaries of good taste – but he may have overstepped the line with his latest gag about 9/11.

Appearing on Comedy Central’s Roast of Rob Lowe, originally broadcast in the US on September 5, Carr aimed t too-close-to-the-bone quip at Saturday Night Live comic Peter Davidson and his father, who died during the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center.

“I’m appalled that people would come here and make jokes about the sacrifice Pete’s heroic father made on 9/11,” Carr quipped. “This is not the roast of Pete Davidson’s father. That was in 2001.”

Watch the Jimmy Carr joke in full below:

Lowe was left pretty dumbstruck by the gag, visibly mouthing “wow, wow” after the punchline. Audience members were left with jaws agape and Davidson himself laughed uncomfortably.

It’s a risky gag at the best of times, but when you realise it was broadcast on UK TV in the early hours of Sunday morning – the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks – then it’s all the more awkward.

Social media was quick to react to Carr’s gag, with opinion decidedly split.
