Jennifer Lawrence could be about to leave cinemagoers everywhere walking like John Wayne if the first trailer for her latest movie, Mother!, is anything to go by.
The details surrounding the film, which is being directed by Darren Aronofksy, remain top secret at this stage but all signs so far indicate something shit-yourself-scary is on the horizon.
So far the only details of the plot offered up suggest the film focuses on a couple whose “relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence.”
The new trailer does little to quell any suggestion that grim stuff is on the horizon.
In the teaser Lawrence appears, dressed in a nightgown, asking “What brings you to us?” before a montage of fire, insects and terrified faced flash up.
A new set of posters, including one featuring co-star Javier Bardem, have only added to the sense of dread surrounding the movie.
One of the new images sees Bardem engulfed in flames and holding a silver sphere.
And this point you have to wonder what the fuck is going on, but then it’s important to remember filmgoers are in safe hands with Aronofsky
The director already delivered the goods in similar circumstances in Black Swan and, with Michelle Pfeiffer also in the cast for Mother!, this has all the makings of a modern horror classic.
It also represents a notable departure for Lawrence, who has not really dabbled in horror and the macabre all that much, unless you consider the teen-led effort The House At The End Of The Street to be horror. It’s not.
Anyway, Mother! arrives on September 15.
