Further controversy erupted around president-elect Donald Trump after he became embroiled in a war of words with Broadway show Hamilton over the weekend.

Trump’s vice president-elect Mike Pence attended a sold-out show of the musical on Saturday, only to be roundly booed by the audience and told by actor Brandon Victor Dixon that people were worried that Mr Trump would “not protect them”.

Naturally, this sent Trump into a Twitter frenzy, and he spent the weekend slating the Hamilton cast – and getting a dig in at Alec Baldwin’s continued portrayal of him on Saturday Night Live.

Unfortunately, an old tweet from Ivanka Trump has come back to haunt Team Donald.

Back in March, Trump’s eldest daughter went to watch the show and delivered a glowing review of the smash hit musical.

“I finally saw Hamilton last night. I had very high expectations and they were still surpassed!” she wrote.

Even Pence has distanced himself from the comments, appearing on Fox News after the incident to say he “really enjoyed the show”.

“Hamilton is just an incredible production, incredibly talented people and it was a real joy to be there,” he commented.

Of the boos and jeers he received, Pence added: “I nudged my kids and reminded them that’s what freedom sounds like.

“But at the end I did hear what was said from the stage. I can tell you I wasn’t offended by what was said – I’ll leave it to others as to whether it was the appropriate venue to say it.”
