Idris Elba has once again emerged as the favourite to replace Daniel Craig as James Bond after details of a conversation involving franchise producer Barbara Broccoli were leaked to the press.

According to the Daily Star, Broccoli opened up about the possibility of a black actor taking on the role during a conversation with film director Antoine Fuqua.

Fuqua revealed the details of the conversation in an interview with the tabloid, confirming that Broccoli believes “it is time” for a non-white actor to take the role.

Fuqua believes it “will happen eventually” with Elba thought to be the frontrunner for the role.

The Equalizer director went as far as giving his blessing for the British actor to take the part, stating: “Idris could do it if he was in shape. You need a guy with a physically strong presence. Idris has that.”

Craig is contracted to play Bond one final time, with Danny Boyle set to direct the next instalment in the enduring spy franchise.

Boyle has already begun working on a script for the film alongside Trainspotting writer John Hodge.

In the meantime, news of Elba’s potential casting as 007 has divided fans on Twitter with many welcoming the news while others have cast shade on the notion, arguing the 45-year-old actor is too old for the part.

Though the news is still some way off being confirmed, it represents a surprising turn of events given that Elba’s chances of landing the part appeared to be all but over until recently.

However, with the likes of Liam Neeson, Denzel Washington, and Bruce Willis continuing to make fast-paced action movies into their 50s and beyond when it comes to casting 007 age may just be a number.

Then again, David Oyelowo is always available…
