Idris Elba is bored of James Bond. Or, more specifically, he’s bored of people mentioning him as a possible replacement for Daniel Craig as 007.
Besides the fact Craig has already confirmed plans to return as Bond for at least one more outing, Elba thinks he’s got zero chance of landing the role.
It’s difficult to disagree with him: Elba is a similar age to Craig, just four years his junior, and it’s likely that whoever comes in next will be much younger, with a view to doing a series of films as James Bond.
Elba has got an interesting theory when it comes to the continuing speculation that he may one day play 007 though and it’s not entirely wide of the mark. Speaking to The New York Times, Elba outlined why he felt the press continued to link him to the role.
“It’s interesting that the James Bond thing continues to go,” he said. “I think it’s more about, we just want to have a black guy play James Bond rather than Idris Elba, the actor, play James Bond. That’s the part that I’m like, ‘Ugh, come on’.”
Details on the 25th James Bond film remain scarce, though it has been suggested that Christoph Waltz will return as Blofeld alongside another, possibly blind, supervillain.
In the meantime, Boardwalk Empire actor Jack Huston remains the bookies’ favourite to eventually replace Craig with the actor priced at a tempting 3/1 just ahead of Tom Hardy, who remains in the running at 4/1.
Elba is back at 8/1 and, if loaded were a bunch of betting men, which we definitely are, he’s one we’d probably steer clear of for now.
Seriously, guys, just let it go. This is getting weird now.
