It’s the most anticipated film in ages, but Star Wars fans are keeping schtum on the plot following the first screening of The Force Awakens in LA last night.
Initial verdicts of JJ Abrams’ new production have been glowing, but journalists and a select number of fans have proven as secretive as the movie’s actors on the finer details until a reviews embargo is lifted tomorrow.
Five thousand guests attended the premiere as Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa and Han Solo were reunited for the first time on the big screen since 1983’s Return Of The Jedi.
Onlookers reported seeing positive signs as cinemagoers made their way out of the first screening, with Hollywood Reporter journalist Matthew Belloni tweeting: “Star Wars premiere just getting out now. A LOT of smiling faces”.
Journalists attending the top secret screenings had their phones confiscated and also signed non-disclosure forms confirming they wouldn‘t leak any plot details.
But many still tweeted to give vague indications that The Force Awakens could be one of the best Star Wars films, with claims that “JJ nailed it” and “It was epic, awesome and perfect. The cast was stellar. JJ killed it.”
Fans who had been camping out for days described it as “amazing”, with one gushing to a local news channel: “It met all of my expectations”.
The seventh instalment in the film franchise, set about 30 years after events in Return Of The Jedi, features many of the original cast as well as some new faces.
Many are now predicting that the film – which goes on general release in the UK on Thursday – will shatter world box office records.
Tomorrow will see the London premiere in Leicester Square, where Abrams will be joined by cast members including Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill and newcomer Daisy Ridley for the red carpet event. Following the premiere, the cast will attend the official afterparty at the Tate Britain.
