Grand Theft Auto fans still have a while to wait until the next instalment arrives though.

The Grand Theft Auto franchise could be heading back to Vice City, the setting for one of the most popular games in the franchise – but there’s a twist.

According to the online rumours GTA VI could also feature a female main character.

Metro is reporting that The Know, a YouTube channel that previously leaked details on Dark Souls III, have an idea of what developers Rockstar has in store for the long-awaited follow-up.

Though far from substantiated, the rumours suggest that the next Grand Theft Auto game will return to Vice City could also take the action on to South America.

GTA VI may also feature a playable female character. There’s no word yet on whether the game would still be set in the 1980s, as with the first Vice City entry, but even a modern-day Miami/South American setting would be enticing enough.

Fans still have a while to wait for any new instalment though, with a potential release date of sometime in 2021 mentioned by The Know.

While all of these claims remain unconfirmed and Rockstar is known for its secrecy when it comes to the details surrounding plans for their games, The Know do have contacts within the industry.

The YouTube channel also has a track record for this sort of thing, having previously provided accurate information on Dark Souls III ahead of its release.

Rockstar, meanwhile, are unlikely to provide any kind of update in the near future – they are too busy preparing for the release of Red Dead Redemption II later this year.

The introduction of a female protagonist could be a positive step forward though, given some of the criticism directed at the franchise over the portrayal of women in previous titles.

Grand Theft Auto V, for example, was criticised for the way it depicted violence against women and the way females were painted as sex objects in the game.
