A host of new actors are heading to the Upside Down for Stranger Things season two, including a star of classic 80s movie The Goonies.
Netflix has cast Sean Astin, who also played Samwise Gamgee in the Lord Of The Rings film franchise, in the second series of the hit drama series, Entertainment Weekly reports.
Astin will play Bob Newby, who’s described as a “kindhearted former nerd” who went to high school with Winona Ryder’s Joyce and police chief Hopper.
It feels like a fitting appointment, especially as Stranger Things frequently harks back to 80s movies like the Goonies and Stand By Me.
Whiplash and Aliens star Paul Reiser has also joined the series as a Department of Energy employee who’s “tasked with containing the events of last year.”
Danish actress Linnea Berthelsen has also been cast as a character named Roman.
She’s described as an “emotionally damaged, magnetic young woman who suffered a great loss as a child. Although she does not live in Hawkins, she is mysteriously connected to the supernatural events at the lab…”
Stranger Things became the surprise TV hit of the summer in 2016, and it was previously reported that the series is bigger than both of Netflix’s Marvel properties Daredevil and Jessica Jones.
The series returns in 2017. Watch the trailer for Stranger Things season one below:
