The first trailer for Darkest Hour has arrived and, on the basis of the two-and-a-half-minute clip alone, Gary Oldman looks a shoo-in for an Oscar in 2018.
Oldman plays Winston Churchill in the Joe Wright-directed drama, which focuses on his first few turbulent days in office and how he dealt with the imminent threat of a Nazi invasion.
Much had already been made of the incredible physical transformation Oldman underwent to look the part of the wartime hero and, if these brief segments are anything to go by, he also sounds the part too.
Charting Churchill’s tricky task of juggling the demands of a sceptical King, unprepared public and duplicitous Conservative party, always plotting against him, the film is fast shaping up as essential viewing.
And few would begrudge Oldman the Best Actor Oscar his efforts have so warranted down the years, having come closest in 2012 when he lost out to The Artist star Jean Dujardin despite an impressive turn in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
Oldman is joined by an all-star cast for Darkest Hour which includes Kristen Scott Thomas, Lily James, Stephen Dillane, Ronald Pickup and Ben Mendelsohn.
Based on a script by The Theory of Everything scribe Anthony McCarten, Darkest Hour is due to be released on January 12 2018.
