Ryan Collins, the man behind the 2014 celebrity nude photo leak dubbed ‘The Fappening’, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison.
The 36-year-old originally pleaded guilty to felony hacking charges earlier this year. Collins established a phishing scheme in November 2012, running it for nearly two years to recover logins for 50 iCloud celebrity accounts and 72 Gmail addresses.
“He sent e-mails to victims that appeared to be from Apple or Google and asked victims to provide their usernames and passwords,” said the Justice Department in a statement.
“After illegally accessing the e-mail accounts, Collins obtained personal information including nude photographs and videos. In some instances, Collins would use a software program to download the entire contents of the victims’ Apple iCloud backups.”
His victims included Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton, Kaley Cuoco and Kirsten Dunst, reports The Guardian.
Collins was initially faced up to five years in prison but prosecutors recommended he be sentenced to just 18 months as part of a plea deal.
