Plans for Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s much-anticipated big screen adaptation of the arcade classic Rampage appear to finally be taking shape and there’s already plenty to get excited about.
First released as an arcade game way back in 1986 by Bally Midway, Rampage saw players take control of a series of gigantic monsters seemingly based on familiar favourites like King Kong and Godzilla.
The aim of the game was to try and survive the onslaught of approaching military forces while steadily reducing the surrounding city to rumble. All told, it was big, dumb, arcade fun and for much of the three decades that followed, it continued to be just that.
A string of sequels, including a board game, followed on pretty much every major console in the years that followed but, in 2011, the franchise took an unusual turn when New Line Cinema announced plans for a theatrical film adapation.
Now, nearly six years on, filming has finally commenced on the Rampage movie with Dwayne Johnson set to star – so what do we know about the movie so far? Quite a few things, actually
Who Is Dwayne Johnson playing?
According to Collider, Johnson is playing “Primatologist Davis Okoye, a man who keeps people at a distance” according to the report, his character “shares an unshakable bond with George, the extraordinarily intelligent, silverback gorilla who has been in his care since birth”
So Johnson will be playing a scientist type who spends most of his time talking to gorillas, specifically George, the King Kong-alike protagonist of the original arcade game. Sounds good to us.
What will the Rampage movie focus on?
The official synopsis provided to Collider explains that “a rogue genetic experiment gone awry” transform’s Okoye’s gorilla mate George into a “raging monster”.
“To make matters worse, it’s soon discovered there are other similarly altered alpha predators,” the synopsis adds, all but confirming that George will be joined by Rampage’s other famous monsters, the Godzilla-like Lizzie and Ralph, who is basically a giant werewolf.
“As these newly created monsters tear across North America, destroying everything in their path, Okoye teams with a discredited genetic engineer to secure an antidote, fighting his way through an ever-changing battlefield, not only to halt a global catastrophe but to save the fearsome creature that was once his friend.”
Sounds big, brash and kind of brilliant.
Who is writing the script for the Rampage movie?
Ryan Engle, who is perhaps best known for writing the suitably daft plane-set Liam Neeson thriller Non-Stop, wrote the original Rampage script.
Since then, however, two writers have been enlisted to perform rewrites. They include Ryan Condal, who previously penned the script to the Johnson-fronted Hercules movie and Carlton Cuse.
Cuse is perhaps best known for his work writing on Lost as well as a whole host of notable TV projects including The Strain, Bates Motel and The Returned.
Who is directing the Rampage movie?
Brad Peyton has been enlisted to direct the Rampage movie which appears a smart move for two specific reasons.
He’s not only worked with The Rock on Journey 2: The Mysterious Island and San Andreas but, in the latter of those two projects, proved himself more than capable of helming a big budget disaster flick full of eye-catching stunts and action set pieces.
Will the Rampage movie be a straight up action film?
In an interview with We Got This Covered, Peyton also confirmed that while the writers had used “the original game as our inspiration” the film is “really going to surprise people.”
“It’s going to be a lot more emotional, a lot scarier and a lot more real than you’d expect. So you look at that original concept about a lab that affects these animals and makes them rampage, and that’s the nugget.
Who else will is starring in the Rampage movie?
MovieWeb reports that Johnson will be teaming up with Naomie Harris for Rampage, with the Oscar winner set to play the part of a geneticist keen to take down the movie’s three main monsters in as safe a way as possible.
In terms of villains, Malin Akerman leads the way as the head of an evil corporation responsible for the creation of George, Lizzie and Ralph.
Other notable cast members include Jeffrey Dean Morgan as a shady government agent and Joe Manganiello, who looks likely to play a henchman of sorts for Akerman.
The cast is rounded out by Jake Lacy, Marley Shelton, PJ Byrne, Jack Quaid, Matt Gerald and Breanne Hill in as-yet-unspecified roles.
When will the Rampage movie be released?
Rampage is expected to arrive in cinemas on 20 April, 2018.
