Marvel’s Daredevil was already essential viewing and now there’s a new reason to watch – thanks to the introduction of Elektra.

Fast-rising French actress Elodie Yung is taking on the role, originally played on film by Jennifer Garner.

With Daredevil’s second season debuting on Netflix today, and Yung pretty much stealing the show as Elektra Natchios, now’s as good a time as any to get up to speed on the 35-year-old.

Yung was nearly a lawyer

Raised in France by a French mother and Cambodian father, Yung graduated with a law degree from the University of Paris before making a career U-turn to pursue acting. The gamble paid off: Yung bagged a role in TV series La Vie Devant Nous in 2002 before starring in Cannes Film Festival movie Fragile(s).

She’s made a name in Hollywood

After leading the cast of French actionfest District 13 Ultimatum, Yung went to Hollywood where she played Miriam Wu in the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo remake before starring in GI Joe 2: Retaliation with Dwayne Johnson. She’s also featured in the decidedly ropey looking Gods Of Egypt.

She could kick your arse

Playing Elektra means Yung has to throw herself into some intense action scenes. Lucky, then, that she’s already a black belt in karate. “I felt very rusty, to be honest, because I haven’t practiced for a long time, and everything goes so fast on this show,” she said. “I did some Muay Thai so that helps as well, because what they tried to do with Elektra is to mix different types of martial arts, so we have a bit of Capoeira, we have some Tai Kwon Do, we have some Indonesian martial arts

“It’s very complex, but they try to mix it up so it’s fun.”

She’ll turn Daredevil into Fight Club

Elektra has been around in comic book form since creator Frank Miller introduced her in the 80s. The ex-lover of Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock, Daredevil producer Marco Ramirez said that Yung’s character represents the dark, Fight Club-style flipside of the titular hero.

“Their connection runs dark and deep,” Ramirez explained. “She’s his Tyler Durden. People throw the word ‘temptation’ around, but what’s amazing about their relationship is that she doesn’t really tempt him. Instead, she draws a darkness out of Matt that’s already there. She knows all his secrets, even the ones he hasn’t told her yet.”

She’s teaming up with another Marvel favourite

Ryan Reynolds is hot property thanks to Deadpool. Him and Yung feel like a match made in heaven for The Hitman’s Bodyguard, an action/thriller about a protection agent whose new job is to shield a wanted hitman. There’s been no word on exactly who Yung is playing but, with Gary Oldman, Samuel L Jackson and Salma Hayek also cast, this is shaping up to be a corker.

Daredevil season two is available on Netflix from today.
