Eddie Murphy is set to star alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito in Triplets, the long-awaited sequel to Twins and everyone should be excited.
Released back in 1988, Twins saw Schwarzenegger and DeVito team-up as the most unlikely of long-lost brothers, created in a lab and then separated at birth. Hilarity ensues.
Directed by Ghostbusters filmmaker Ivan Reitman, Twins grossed a whopping $216.6 million at the box office off a budget of £18 million. It also gave Arnie a chance to flex his comedic chops alongside DeVito, with mixed but profitable results.
Twins was one of those films a whole generation of movie fans grew up watching on home video and via endless repeats on TV. It may not have aged that well, but here at loaded we’d rather not revisit it and have those cherished memories tarnished.
It’s probably worth mentioning at this point that Schwarzenegger, Reitman and DeVito have already reunited for a sequel-of-sorts, Junior, the film where Schwarzenegger has a baby. Not sure where the baby resided during the pregnancy. Or where it came out. Better not to think about it.
However, talk of Triplets, the tentatively-titled follow-up, has been floating around Hollywood for close to a decade. Back in 2012, it looked like the film was finally set to get the go-ahead, after an official announcement from Universal.
Then everything went quiet again. But now Triplets is back on and, what’s more, Murphy appears to have signed on the dotted line to join the cast.
Schwarzenegger has confirmed to Deadline that Murphy is attached to star and that the script for the film has been written.
“Funny thing that happens in the mixing of the sperm,” Arnie said of the new film.
The plot is pretty obvious to put together: Arnie and DeVito discover they are not twins but, rather, triplets and their other brother happens to be Murphy. Comedy ensues. Or something like that anyway.
There’s no word yet on a release date but don’t expect it to arrive any time soon – Schwarzenegger is making Terminator 6 first.
