It’s the news action movie fans everywhere have been waiting for and now it’s finally been confirmed: Fast and Furious is getting a spin-off movie starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham.

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that the film is expected to be released on July 26, 2019, with franchise regular Chris Morgan penning the script and Justin Lin potentially returning to direct, having last helmed The Fast and Furious 6.

Plot details, understandably, are scarce, but it’s thought that the film will see Johnson’s Security Service agent Luke Hobbs team up with Statham’s reformed villain Deckard Shaw to take on another, unknown, quantity.

Charlize Theron’s Cypher remains a possibility, having escaped at the end of Fast and Furious 8. However, given the personal “beef” that character has with Dominic Toretto, it’s likely she will be saved for Vin Diesel.

Another option is Luke Evans’ Owen Shaw, who was resurrected for the last film and whose fate remains unknown. Ultimately, it looks more likely that a new villain will emerge on the scene, in what will most likely be a high-profile addition to the cast.

“Fast & Furious is one of Universal’s most beloved properties, and we handle every decision we make surrounding this franchise with great care,” Universal Pictures chairman Donna Langley told The Hollywood Reporter.

“The global brand of Fast & Furious is strong and full of iconic characters, and we look forward to continuing to build on the film that started it all, as well as expanding into different narratives beginning with our first spinoff.”

The announcement also means that production on Fast and Furious 9 will be delayed for a year, with the film opening in April 2020, rather than 2019.

It’s a decision that has already prompted a furious reaction from franchise co-star Tyrese Gibson, who hit out at Johnson in a series of scathing comments.

There’s no word yet on whether any of the Fast and Furious “family” will feature in the spin-off. Something tells loaded Gibson won’t be invited back.
