David Beckham paid an emotional tribute to the people of Manchester in the wake of Manchester United’s Europe League final victory over Ajax.

22 people lost their lives when an explosive device was detonated at the M.E.N. Arena during an Ariana Grande concert in the city.

Since then Manchester and the wider world has been in a state of mourning, adding an extra emotional edge to the showpiece final.

Keen to pay tribute to Manchester, a city synonymous with football, Jose Mourinho’s charges duly delivered a near-faultless performance to lift the trophy and ensure Champions League football returns to the red half of the city next season.

In the wake of the game, Beckham was quick to pay tribute to the team’s success and the city as a whole on Instagram at what is an unfathomably difficult time for sport.

“Tonight was more important than sport,” he wrote.

“Yes a big night for Manchester United but an even bigger night for the city and for our country

“At a time when we are grieving for the families that have lost loved ones we have a sport that has bought a little happiness at a difficult time… We pray for peace”

Beckham spent 12 years with Manchester United, rising through the club’s youth ranks and going on to make 394 appearances scoring 85 goals.

During that time he also won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups and the Champions League as part of a period of sustained success for a club and city that remains close to his heart.

Beckham had previously paid tribute to the city on social media in the wake of the shock attack.

Much like the Manchester United legend, our thoughts go out to anyone affected by this most horrific of events.
