Former Aston Villa, Ipswich Town and Sheffield Wednesday star Dalian Atkinson has died at the age of 48.

The ex-footballer passed away after being shot by police with a Taser in the Trench area of Telford.

According to the BBC, West Mercia Police responded to reports of concern for a man’s safety at 1:30am. Atkinson was shot by police and went into cardiac arrest, and he later passed away at 3:00am after undergoing medical treatment.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) have said that “a full and thorough investigation” will take place into Atkinson’s death.

“At this stage the IPCC is aware a Taser was used on the man before he became ill,” they said. “IPCC investigators are at the scene gathering the available information and are attending the post-incident procedures to supervise the recovery of initial evidence.”

Tributes have poured in for Atkinson, with many of his former colleagues morning the loss of the forward who had an eye for a spectacular goal.

Ron Atkinson

“This is an out-and-out tragedy. He was a really popular player with team-mates. He was a really generous lad – sometimes too generous for his own good – but a good lad. He always had a smile on his face and I really like that in a player. He also had terrific ability. I always knew I didn’t need to worry about him in big games.”

Taylor is, of course, referring to Atkinson’s incredible solo goal against Wimbledon in 1992.

The strike bagged him Match of the Day’s goal of the season competition, putting Atkinson in the record books as the Premier League’s first ever winner of the prestigious honour.

Atkinson won the League Cup with Ron Atkinson’s Villa, netting the opening goal in their 3-1 victory against Manchester United.

The forward’s football career also saw him partner John Aldridge up front for Spanish side Real Sociedad and spend two years in Turkey with Fenerbahçe.

He also scored on his only appearance for the England B side in 1990.
