Cristiano Ronaldo could be set to depart Real Madrid this summer, after growing frustrated with life at the Bernabeu.
That’s according to a report from Spanish tv show El Chiringuito de Jugones, which claims that the 32-year-old has already informed club president Florentino Perez of his decision to quit the club next summer.
The rumours come amid a frustrating season for Ronaldo and Real Madrid, who have already fallen eight points behind Barcelona in La Liga and have suffered shock defeats to Girona and Tottenham Hotspur already this season.
Ronaldo, meanwhile, has endured arguably his worst start to the season for Los Blancos.
Things got off to a bad start in the Supercopa de Espana, when Ronaldo earned himself an additional five-game ban after shoving the referee following his sending in the first leg of the fiery encounter with Barcelona.
Though he picked up the FIFA Player of the Year for his efforts in the Champions League last term, has scored just once in seven La Liga appearances this term.
When previously asked by beIN Sports as to why he had yet to sign a new contract with Madrid, Ronaldo said: “I don’t want to renew. I don’t want to renew… I’m very happy with the contract I have.”
That may well be true but one thing Ronaldo was reportedly far from happy with was Real Madrid’s decision to pursue a big money deal for Kylian Mbappe.
Los Blancos may have ended up losing out to Paris Saint-Germain on that occasion, but it was the clearest sign yet that the club is beginning to think about life after Ronaldo.
Ronaldo is also rumoured to be at odds with several other notable stars in the Real Madrid squad, including Isco, who failed to celebrate with CR9 after scoring Real’s third goal in a 3-0 win over Las Palmas – a goal set up by Ronaldo.
The Portuguese forward could yet find his route out of the Bernabeu blocked though, with Perez thought to be against the idea of letting the Ballon D’Or winner leave before the end of his contract.
A big money offer from China or Ronaldo’s former club, Manchester United, could persuade him otherwise.
Manchester United have long been linked with a move for the striker and were previously rumoured to be weighing up a £100m move for the attacker last summer.
Ronaldo remains under contract with the club until 2021 though, meaning anyone looking to land the forward could have a fight on their hands – unless Perez relents, of course…
