Battles for the future of humanity, loads of guns and bullet time – have we been here before?

Ask a film fan growing up in the late 90s and early 2000s to list their most disappointing cinema experiences and the chances are that The Matrix sequels will feature pretty prominently – alongside The Phantom Menace of course.

It wasn’t just that The Matrix follow-ups got way too bogged down in boring Matrix mythology and deeper philosophical leanings – it also lacked the same eye-catching special effects and killer set pieces as the original.

Though it’s still early days, hopes are already high here at loaded that The Dark Tower can recapture some of that magic by offering film fans a blistering, balls-to-the-wall action movie full of guns, lots of guns, and some slo-mo bullet time for good measure.

The omens for The Dark Tower hadn’t looked all that good until recently.

Based on the Stephen King novels of the same name, the film had been hit with delays and reshoots but, if the latest trailer is anything to go by, it may work out alright in the end.

An ambitious and visually striking prospect the film focuses on Roland Deschain (Idris Elba), the last Gunslinger locked in an eternal battle with Walter O’Dim (Matthew McConaughey) otherwise known as the Man In Black.

He’s determined to topple the Dark Tower, you see, in a dick move that would probably bring about the destruction of the universe as we know it.

The fate of the world is at stake and, while the pair have been battling it out in some mythical other world for some time now, the action is just about to spill over into the realm of the real, resulting in some striking Matrix-esque action visuals.

Will the resulting film end up being The Matrix of 2017? It’s probably way too early to say either way but, after so many issues, it does at least look this its coming together nicely.
