Conor McGregor Explains Why Boxers Would Be “Dismantled” In UFC

Ahead of a potential Floyd Mayweather Jr bout, the Notorious was full of fighting talk

Conor McGregor may be heading for a potential boxing bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr but his loyalties remain to UFC.

The Irishman showed as much after offering up a damning assessment of boxing, when measured up to the demands of mixed martial arts.

It all started when McGregor took to Instagram to highlight some of the training work he has been doing with his head striking coach, Owen Roddy.

Though the Notorious was keen to highlight the fine work he had been doing on his boxing skills, he also couldn’t resist the opportunity to highlight exactly why he felt MMA remains the superior discipline.

“Myself and [Owen Roddy] have been working together on unrestricted, unarmed fighting, since we are kids. Not much will change when I fight under the famed, yet very limited, Queensberry rules (boxing rules),” McGregor said.

Then came the real kicker for both fans of boxing and those that take to the ring whether on an amateur level or as a professional.

“No disrespect to single discipline fighters, from boxing to kicking to grappling, just know that understanding one style of fighting is simply not enough,” he began.

“You are lying to yourself. You are easily dismantled in a true fight. A fight with no rules to protect you. In a straight fight, you do not posses (sic) enough tools to keep you alive. You will be dismantled and killed.”

You are easily dismantled in a true fight. A fight with no rules to protect you. In a straight fight, you do not possess enough tools to keep you alive. You will be dismantled and killed. Like the late, great Bruce Lee once said: "When you are talking about fighting, as it is, with no rules, well then baby, you'd better train every part of your body"

McGregor’s comments are likely to re-ignite the old argument about boxing and MMA. Something tells us the Irishman was saying them a little tongue-in-cheek anyway.

He could soon get a chance to see how easy it is for himself when he goes up against Mayweather in a fight that has been long in the waiting.

For McGregor’s sake, we kind of hope he’s right.
