The first full trailer for YouTube Red’s upcoming Karate Kid spin-off series, Cobra Kai, has been released and it’s already generating a major buzz among fans of the original.
In the clip, fans learn Johnny Lawrence, the blonde villain of the first movie, never really got over the humiliation he suffered at the hands of Daniel LaRusso in the first film’s karate competition finale some 34 years ago.
He’s still stuck living in the Valley, drinking beer all day and generally floating through life with little to show for himself.
LaRusso, by contrast, owns his own car dealership and, as it turns out, has become a bit of a dick. In fact, it’s fair to say that the two roles have been very much reversed for this spin-off with Lawrence the down on his luck hero and LaRusso the uptight antagonist.
Things begin to change for Johnny though when he rediscovers his first love: karate. In true Hollywood fashion, he begins by assembling a ragtag bunch of high school misfits before teaching them the finer points of martial arts.
LaRusso soon gets wind of the return of the Cobra Kai dojo though, and heads down to confront his old nemesis with the warning: “You. Me. This. It’s not over.”
High kicks and inspiration are expected to follow. Quite how original stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka will cope with the physical demands of their respective roles is unclear – maybe some Matrix-style wires will be employed.
But one thing is certain: Cobra Kai looks like it’s going to be a blast for anyone who watched the original while credit must go to the writers for upping the ante by having the two main stars swap roles.
Also, how is Ralph Macchio 56!?!?
