Christian Bale is one of the most committed actors working in Hollywood today. It’s not enough to simply act for Bale, no, Christian has to go through physical hell for his art.
He beefed up for American Psycho, lost a ton of weight for The Machinist and even got bald and fat for American Hustle.
Now he’s doing it all over again for arguably his most intense role yet as…Dick Cheney. Er, well, apparently Bale is gaining a ton of weight in order to play the former US vice president in a new biopic from Adam McKay.
McKay, you might remember, previously worked with Bale on The Big Short, a film that Bale actually learned to play the drums for in the space of just two weeks. He also spent nine long hours discussing the film with Michael Burry, the real-life version of his character, who is thought to have Aspergers.
Bale gained wait for that role by existing on a diet dominated by fast-food. “I ate lots of doughnuts, a whole lot of cheeseburgers and whatever I could get my hands on. I literally ate anything that came my way. I was about 185 and went up to 228. I’m still working it off.”
He even cut his hair to appear balding, with a similar look likely to be required for the role of Cheney. There’s no release date set for the planned biopic yet but Bale should be wary of possible side effects of his approach with high blood pressure and sleep apnoea just two potential risks.
And what happens if the film sucks? Jared Leto famously got fat for Chapter 27, but developed gout along the way and was even confined to a wheel chair. All that and the film flopped with critics and at the box office.
