Well… no one saw that coming.

In one of the most extraordinary general elections in recent history, the Conservative party have failed to secure an overall majority.

Theresa May had been predicted to win comfortably only a few weeks ago, but Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour party defied all prior expectations to gain 29 seats across the country last night.

The public was left stunned after a shock exit poll was revealed at 10pm, suggesting that Labour had made the biggest gains since the election of Clement Atlee of 1945.

In the end, the poll turned out to be accurate. The Conservatives won 318 seats, while Labour secured 261 to prevent Theresa May’s party securing an overall majority, ensuring a hung parliament.

Labour’s success was significantly influenced by a high youth turnout of around 70%, and it’s a result no-one could have predicted.

Safe to say, reaction to the result has been burning up social media overnight, and celebrities have been having their say on Twitter.

Inbetweeners star Blake Harrison thinks things are going to change a LOT in the house of commons now…

Lily Allen was pleased to say the least…

Little Britain’s David Walliams was a little bit lost for words…

You can always rely on Ricky Gervais to lower the tone though…

Looks like Russell Brand has finally changed his stance on voting…

This Simpsons gif, meanwhile, pretty much sums up the Conservatives…

Rogue One star Riz Ahmed bigged up Labour…

And James Corden was incredibly proud of the youth getting out to vote…

Jake Humphrey was in a positive, reflective mood

While Ghostpoet is another celeb proud of the youth turnout…

Then there was The Day Today star David Schneider, who summed up the hung parliament result in one movie reference…

Daisy Lowe seemed pretty happy about the whole thing…

And Gary Lineker had the perfect football analogy for the occasion…

Piers Morgan was made to eat a great big slice of humble pie…

But at least former cricketer Michael Vaughan had his priorities right…

And finally, like so many of us, Marcus Brigstocke did NOT see this coming…

We’ll have to wait to find out what happens next, but there’s no doubt that this general election has been one of the most remarkable in British political history.
