It’s almost 14 years since comedy troupe Broken Lizard burst onto the scene with cult stoner movie Super Troopers, but it would appear that the long wait for a sequel to the 2002 hit is almost over.
The group, made up of Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske, went on to enjoy some success with comedies like Club Dread, Beerfest and The Slammin’ Salmon
Super Troopers remains their signature hit though and the one fans have been crying out for a sequel to. Perhaps that is why, when the gang decided to seek crowd-funding for the follow-up, the response was so positive.
Having set a target to raise $2 million to fund the film, in just 30 days Broken Lizard racked up a total of more than double that – $4.4 million to be precise.
Those additional funds are being well spent too, with the gang promising “bigger stunts, bathrooms for the women on set (men will still have to use the woods), louder explosions, cameos from real Hollywood actors, more bearf*cking, and maybe Kate Upton.”
And while there has been no confirmation of Upton’s participation in the new film, the similarly stunning Marisa Coughlan is returning with the rest of the Super Trooper gang, with filming on the sequel commencing this week.
Confirming the news via the Super Trooper 2 Facebook page, the movie will also see Chandrasekhar return as director with all of the group back to write and star in the comedy, which is being filmed in Boston.
Having made $18.5m off a budget of $2.5m last time round, a similar level of success could even convince the guys to come back for a third film, completing a trilogy that had looked unlikely until the dawn of crowdfunding.
