Brad Pitt appears a man transformed in every sense of the word for the first trailer to David Michôd’s War Machine.
The film has been made exclusively for Netflix and sees Pitt cast as a character based on the real life General Stanley McChrystal.
Charting the general’s remarkable rise and fall as an anti-establishment, pro-soldier leader, the film appears part Patton, part Jarhead and the perfect war movie for these increasingly fraught times.
Pitt, to his credit, appears to be getting in the spirit of the piece, that sees the actor undergo quite the physical transformation.
Gone are the trademark brown locks, boyish good looks, relaxed attitude and soft voice and in its place comes a grey dye job, mannered military posture, stony face and interesting accent choice.
It’s all part and parcel of playing a charismatic four-star general who went into Afghanistan like a rock star and left, humiliated by a no-holds-barred expose and facing questions from all directions.
Michôd has rarely held his punches when it comes to his filmmaking choices, with previous efforts like Animal Kingdom and The Rover both proving memorable for movie fans the world over.
He’s joined by a pretty impressive cast that unclues Topher Grace, Tilda Swinton, Sir Ben Kingsley and former Breakfast Club alumni Anthony Michael Hall, who appears transformed.
Offering up something akin to the criminally underrated Joaquin Phoenix war saga, Buffalo Soldiers, War Machine arrives on Netflix on 26 May.
