The Last Blockbuster Is Getting Its Very Own Beer

By Jack Beresford

September 03, 2018

Blockbuster will always hold a special place in the hearts of a certain generation.

Long before the advent of downloads and streaming, a trip to one of these video and DVD rental emporiums was the only chance you had to lap up the latest movie releases.

Or, at least, that was the plan. In reality, you would often turn up at your local Blockbuster with plans of renting the latest release only to find out all their copies were out to rent.

Then it was a case of scouring the shelves for an adequate alternative. Sometimes it all worked out for the best. Other times you ended up renting Weekend at Bernie’s 2.

But this is all irrelevant now because Blockbuster is on its last legs.

In fact, just a single Blockbuster Video store remains over in Bend, Oregon, in the US.

This final, remaining Blockbuster isn’t going down without a fight though. In fact, it’s being celebrated in the best way possible: with its very own beer.

It’s all thanks to 10 Barrel Brewing, who have announced a special, limited edition Blockbuster-inspired beer celebrating the final remaining store.

A Schwarzbier inspired by the brewery’s S1nist0r Black Ale this particular tipple boasts “nuances of red licorice” and is aptly named ‘The Last Blockbuster’ in honour of the store.

It’s even got its very own, VHS-case-style blurb explaining the idea:

Remember how excited you would get when the latest blockbuster was released on DVD and you’d head to your local Blockbuster, hoping they’d have a copy left for you? Those days have come and gone but, as you may have seen, there is only one remaining Blockbuster located right here in Bend, where you can relive your movie renting experience.

To keep the experience alive, 10 Barrel teamed up with the Blockbuster team to create an exclusive Blockbuster beer! The “official” Blockbuster beer – The Last Blockbuster – pairs perfectly with buttery theater popcorn and your favorite movie-sized chocolate with a light body, smooth finish and hints of nostalgia.

Set to be made available at a special block party being held at the Blockbuster store on September 21st, fans are being invited to take to the event’s Facebook page to decide what film ended up being shown at the event.

Strange Brew is currently in the lead ahead of Hocus Pocus. As long as Weekend at Bernie’s 2 isn’t on the cards, consider us very interested.
