There are some incredibly creative craft beer makers out there right now, offering any number of weird and wonderful tipples – but have you ever heard of a beer capable of treating a specific medical condition?

If the answer is no – and it should be – then you might want to take a closer look at Libeeration; the world’s first beer brewed specifically to treat the symptoms of the menopause. The menopause really isn’t a pleasant experience. Hot flushes, mood swings and weight gain are just a few of the symptoms women suffering from this particular affliction feel.

Some small comfort could finally be at hand though, because craft beer makers Portsmouth Brewery have come up with a brew to help soothe some of these issues. Some six years in the making, Libeeration is the result of some meticulous planning on the part of Portsmouth Brewery.

A selection of herbs and plants known for their calming qualities were included in the brew, which was developed alongside a herbalist to ensure it offers the maximum benefits to women with menopausal issues.

“After consulting with women health practitioners and herbalists, our team came up with ingredients believed to relieve symptoms like sleeplessness, hot flashes, and mood swings,” Joanne Francis, co-owner of the Portsmouth Brewery, told Konbini.

Ingredients include Chickweed, Chamomile, Lemon Balm, Damiana, Lemon Balm, Motherwort, Mugwort, Rose and stinging nettle. Yes, stinging nettle.

Francis is hopeful that the beer will not only help with these kinds of health issues but also offer a female-focused craft beer – something almost unheard of until now.

Francis added: “We want to shift the mentality from focusing on the negative aspects of this stage in life, to celebrating the liberating aspects!” It’s not the first unusual brew to catch loaded’s eye in recent times – another craft beer, released a few months back, claimed to boost the male sex drive.

Beer is moving in some very interesting directions and loaded can’t wait to see what happens next.
