When the imminent release of 10 Cloverfield Lane was announced by JJ Abrams’ production company Bad Robot early last year it took everyone by complete surprise – especially fans of the original Cloverfield.
Originally an ultra low budget spec script titled The Cellar, the film was later adapted to become what Abrams would later term “a blood relative” of the 2008 cult hit.
Not strictly an out-and-out sequel to Cloverfield, Bad Robot had been put off the idea of a full-blown follow-up after the release of films like Godzilla and Pacific Rim, which both centred on similar kaiju-inspired monsters.
But after adapting 10 Cloverfield Lane into something of a “side-quel”, Bad Robot may be preparing to repeat the trick – except with one major twist.
Slashfilm is reporting that the next Bad Robot production, Overlord, could well be another “side-quel” of sorts to the original.
Fences actor Jovan Adepo is set to star in Overload alongside Wyatt Russell, son of Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn.
Fresh from memorable turns in everything from 22 Jump Street to Black Mirror, Russell is set to take centre stage in a film which, if the synopsis is correct, could take Cloverfield in a strange new direction – one that takes events back to World War 2 to be precise.
The synopsis reads:
On the eve of D-Day, American paratroopers are dropped behind enemy lines to carry out a mission crucial to the invasion’s success. But as they approach their target, they begin to realize there is more going on in this Nazi-occupied village than a simple military operation. They find themselves fighting against supernatural forces, part of a Nazi experiment.
Not only is the film being put together by Cloverfield’s backers Bad Robot but it also has Lindsey Weber, who produced 10 Cloverfield Lane, on board.
Could this be the latest chapter in a quickly expanding Clover-verse of movies? Bad Robot continues to keep its cards close to its chest but the omens certainly look good.
In any case, fans probably won’t find out if Overload is a Cloverfield movie until some time close to the release date, so stay tuned for more information on this one!
