Anthony Edwards, Tom Cruise’s co-star and former co-pilot in Top Gun, has a great idea for how he can feature in the long-awaited sequel to the 1980s classic.
You might remember Edwards as Goose, Maverick’s Radar Intercept Officer in the original film. You may also remember that Goose ended up getting himself killed half way through the film in a mid-air accident that was in no way Maverick’s fault. Not at all.
Edwards appears undeterred though, appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to pitch a tongue-in-cheek idea for how he can return this time round: Goose Ghost.
It’s not an idea that needs a lot of explaining: Goose is back and this time he’s a ghost in the grand tradition of such spectre-based classics as…well, Ghost.
In any case, Edwards is clearly not at all serious about the idea of returning for the second movie, unlike Val Kilmer, who has been lobbying to reprise his role as Iceman for the second film.
Unfortunately for Val, his allegedly fractious relationship with Tom Cruise and a plot that might see Maverick operating as an instructor to a new group of drone fighting pilots, there may be little room for Kilmer.
There have long been rumours that Cruise and Kilmer didn’t get on on the set of Top Gun, though the latter has always played down those claims.
With Cruise yet to comment on any additional casting or plot plans for Top Gun 2, suddenly things have become a little bit awkward. At least Edwards’ video will cheer them up!
