AMERICAN HORROR STORY, the hit anthology horror drama series created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk for the specific purpose of terrifying audiences, is now into its seventh nerve-shattering season – available now on DVD & Blu-ray – and arguably its most frightening yet. It’s packed with demonic cult leaders, killer clowns and gruesome moments that’ll cause viewers to backflip off the sofa.

Here’s a look at the most shocking moments from the most fear-inducing franchise ever made, that started in 2011 and has been scaring us silly ever since.

9

MATTRESS MONSTER

(Hotel, Season 5)

Imagine it – you book into your room and all you want is a hot bath and long sleep. You lie down on a big, inviting bed and then this emerges from underneath you. Think what the TripAdvisor reviews were like for this particular stay!

8

MANSON’S MADNESS

(Cult, Season 7)

Are you ready for some chills down the spine? In a truly disturbing flashback during season 7, AHS recreates the Charles Manson cult’s shocking murder spree in 1969.

7

DELPHINE’S DEPRAVITY

(Coven, Season 3)

Kathy Bates plays Madame Delphine LaLaurie in season 3, a real-life member of New Orleans high society who just happened to have a penchant for torture. The scene where Delphine snips a toe is cringe-inducing.

6

FACE OFF

(Asylum, Season 2)

The character of Bloody Face is inspired by notorious real-life serial killer Ed Gein, who used to dig up bodies and make things out of the skin and bones – including furniture and clothing. Similarly, Bloody Face turns the heads of his victims into grotesque masks, while utilising the rest of the corpses for household items. It’s upcycling that leads to upchucking.

5

TWISTY’S PICNIC

(Freak Show, Season 4)

Twisty the clown, inspired by the notorious murderer John Wayne Gacy, interrupts a young couple in the park. He does some juggling, then stabs the man to death. It has to be said, his act could do with some fine-tuning.

4

CAN YOU BEAR TO WATCH?

(Coven, Season 3)

Season 3 sees a coven of witches running a boarding school in New Orleans. The scene where headmistress Cordelia (played by Sarah Paulson) stabs herself in the eyes with a pair of gardening shears – in a bid to get her ‘visions’ back – is pretty much unbearable.

3

THE BEASTLY BUTCHER

(Roanoke, Season 6)

The brilliant Kathy Bates, an AHS regular, is utterly, utterly chilling in season 6, as The Butcher, a colony leader who thinks nothing of chopping up those who betray her. Her performance might even outrank her Oscar-winning turn as Annie Wilkes in Misery. Forget a sledgehammer – give Bates a meat cleaver and it is game over folks.

2

THE RUBBER MAN

(Murder House, Season 1)

Fancy a sleepless night – in fact, make that a sleepless week? Then take a look at the Rubber Man from the first season of AHS. Dressed head to toe in shiny rubber, once seen this ghoulish figure is never forgotten.

1

SUPERMARKET SCREAM

(Cult, Season 7)

In Cult, Ally (Sarah Paulson) is plagued by phobias, and her world starts to unravel. A simple trip to the supermarket turns into a nightmare – she starts seeing things in the deserted aisles, including this fiendish looking character. Time to head to the eight items or less, and fast!

Bet you can’t wait for season 8! While the upcoming season has regulars Sarah Paulson, Cheyenne Jackson, Emma Roberts and Kathy Bates returning to the show, the real stars, of course, are the scares. The plot of Season 8 – Apocalypse – is a closely guarded secret, but suffice to say, with a name like that, it will be a nightmare-inducing terrorfest…

AMERICAN HORROR STORY SEASON 7: CULT is available now on Blu-ray and DVD.

AMERICAN HORROR STORY: APOCALYPSE premieres on FOX on 27th September at 10pm.

AMERICAN HORROR STORY: THE COMPLETE SEASONS 1-6 is available now on DVD.
