A Space Raiders eating contest is coming to the UK and will finally answer the ultimate question: how quickly can you eat 10 packs of the corn-based snack?

Launched back in 1987, Space Raiders soon became a firm favourite of school kids up and down the country, helped in no small part by the fact they had a retail price of just 10p and tasted great.

Each crisp took the shape of an alien head, with flavours including beef, spicy and, most notably, pickled onion. A great part of any lunch box or something you were guaranteed to find down your local corner shop, the fact is we all grew up eating Space Raiders.

So much so, in fact, that the makers even began printing mini comics on the back of packs, chronicling the adventures of Astra and her Space Pirates, who happened to eat a lot of Space Raiders themselves.

The prices may have changed, and the comics are now long gone, but Space Raiders remain on our shelves and the nation’s hearts and stomachs. So much so, in fact, that plans for a new Space Raiders Eating Competition in Birmingham are proving popular.

The Facebook page attached to the event has already attracted interest from over 8,000 fans and counting and it’s not difficult to see why.

The challenge is simple: contests must eat 10 packets of pickled onion Space Raiders in the fastest possible time. The winner is whoever can do it the fastest. That’s right: this is your chance to put all those countless hours spent consuming crisps to good use.

There are prizes too, with a box of space raiders handed to the winner, £12 cash prize for second place and £8 for third. Fourth place will get 10 bags of Space Raiders and fifth gets five.

It’s taking place on July 4th from 6:30pm at the Jubilee Centre in Birmingham and all money raised at the event is going to SIFA Fireside, a drop-in centre providing support and services for vulnerably housed and homeless adults in Birmingham.

Further details on the event can be found on the official Facebook page. Now get training!
