Buffy the Vampire Slayer, aired its first episode on March 10th 1997, it’s been twenty years but feels like just yesterday.
The Joss Whedon creation changed the landscape of television forever and gave us a heroine for the ages. Sarah Michelle Gellar perfectly embodied the role of a feisty and powerful slayer who has to deal with the unique difficulty of growing up and saving the world at the same time.
She handled it with ease, and we can’t help but miss Buffy’s presence on our TV screens. Thank goodness for syndication.
Being the Buffy fans we are, loaded compiled a list of top Buffy moments throughout the show’s history.
If the apocalypse comes, we’ll beep you, Buffy.
Fuck, they were creepy. They flipping levitated, and would cut your heart out while grinning at the same time. Dibs to the makeup department, they did a smashing job giving us the hibbie jibbies.
BUFFY & SPIKE
The storyline involving the raunchy and highly dysfunctional relationship between the vampire Spike and Buffy was amazing. Whedon really pushed the limits with sex scenes for this particular partnering. The scene in the club when he takes her from behind…ah, memories.
The frankenstein for a new generation, this intellectual cyborg monster made from bits of human, robot, demon and vampire was almost likeable, almost. If he wasn’t so murderous and terrifying.
The introduction of slayer and Buffy’s ultimate frenemy Faith played brilliantly by Eliza Dushku was a great addition to Sunnydale until that is she tried to kill Angel. That produced a pretty epic fight scene.
BUFFY & ANGEL SAY GOODBYE
The love story we all aim to imitate. Buffy and Angel were a pair everyone was rooting for, but alas it would never be. The most heart wrenching scene between them was probably the last one we, when the supernatural world they live in, once again gets in the fucking way.
The permanently chirpy witch Willow had a dark side that came to the surface big time after the murder of her love Wiccan Tara. The pain was so palpable it tore fans up and showed that Alison Hannigan is a pretty amazing actor. Also, she ripped a man’s skin off.
The show wasn’t always dramatic, it could be pretty hilarious as well. The plot line involving a robotic version of Buffy, created to do Spike’s bidding was especially memorable.
THE AMAZINGNESS OF ANYA
Anya, the former vengeance demon turned pivotal member of the Scooby Gang, was quirky and without filter, and her one-liners were legendary. She had a heart of gold despite her origins and a serious love for Xander even though he broke her heart. RIP to the woman who coined the term ‘Orgasm Friend.’
AND FINALLY, THE DESTRUCTION OF SUNNYDALE
The end of the hellmouth was the end of the show and we couldn’t think of a more perfect way to close out a perfect show. Thanks for the memories Buffy.
We’ll leave you with the sage words of the Slayer:
‘The hardest thing in this world is to live in it. Be brave. Live.’
