The latest trailer for Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron’s Baywatch movie has arrived and it’s fair to say there’s a lot to talk about.
Due for release on May 29, the film is hotly anticipated by fans of all things beach-based and slo-mo.
So what does the new trailer tell us about the film? Here are nine talking points for starters…
Any lingering doubt that Baywatch may have attempted to play it safe on the humour front is obliterated in the opening seconds of the clip, with The Rock dishing out a sand castle dick joke that suggests things are going to get crude and rude.
It’s no secret that Zac Efron’s character Matt Brody was based on disgraced Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte, but few could have predicted quite how on-the-nose things would get with Efron seen sporting a rather unusual grill – remind you of anyone’s dodgy hair dye?
The casting of The Rock alongside Efron was always likely to result in some pretty musclebound action and the trailer doesn’t disappoint, with the pair engaging in a strongman fridge-lifting contest that even has Efron’s Brody questioning it’s relevance to lifeguarding.
The trailer also offers up a clearer idea of Chopra’s role as the main villain of the piece. As Johnson notes “drugs, murder, a dead body on our beach and it all started when she took over.” Chopra, to her credit, doesn’t disappoint with a turn that screams “Ice Queen.”
Buddy Cop Antics
Comedian and actor Rob Huebel also pops up as Captain Thorpe, who is on hand in the trailer to dish out the customary dressing down to the film’s principal heroes, in a scene that wouldn’t look out of place in Lethal Weapon.
While it seems as though Alexandra Daddario’s character is on hand to dispel any suggestion the female lifeguards on hand are airhead sex symbols, Kelly Rohrbach’s role unfortunately appears to be more one of eye candy.
At one point she runs in slow motion before later getting her butt slapped. Guys…
Some Like It Hot
Baywatch also appears to pay dues to the Billy Wilder classic Some Like It Hot, with Efron’s Brody indulging in a bit of undercover cross dressing required as part of some elaborate and no doubt outlandish mission alongside Johnson.
Much like The Rock’s other notable franchise, Baywatch has an ensemble feel, with several other characters coming to the fore in the trailer. Ilfenesh Hadera, as Johnson’s love interest Stephanie Holden for exmple, gets involved in the ass-kicking and is just one of the relative unknowns that look likely to feature prominently. Bass’ fellow recruit, Ronnie (far right above) is another.
The trailer ends on a hilarious and somewhat grim note, with the gang hiding out in the morgue with “necrotic dead man’s fat” dropping on Efron in a scene that suggests grim, gross out humour definitely isn’t off the menu. Things could get pretty extreme from here.
