Some movie stars are known for going ‘method’ and fully immersing themselves into a scene to give it the realism it deserves.
Sometimes, they go too far, or someone drops the ball and the make-believe becomes very real. The worst case scenarios can even involve accidental deaths, like that of Brandon Lee who was shot and killed by a prop gun on the set of The Crow.
Others are just colossal mistakes or an acting choice. Daniel Day-Lewis is famous for this; he’s been beaten up, contracted deadly pneumonia and even tattooed himself for his array of roles.
Many real injuries occur on set, and a surprising number actually make it into films. loaded rounds up seven times actors got fucked up on film.
BACK TO THE FUTURE PART 3
In the scene where Michael J fox is hanged by Mad Dog Tannen and his goons, the actor was actually choking – this fact was unknown to the crew who assumed he was just acting. We’re just glad he made it out alive.
NOW YOU SEE ME, DROWNING
The opening scene of the film shows Isla Fisher’s character chained in water tank, the actress was actually performing the trick but she somehow got tangled. Fisher tried to signal the crew but once again, they assumed she was just acting. Eventually, she got herself free. Phew.
Matthew Fox was almost killed during a scene in the final episode of the series where Terry O’Quinn’s character stabs him. Someone gave the actor the wrong knife and it almost pierced Fox’s body, which judging by the size of the weapon, it would have killed him for sure. Thankfully he was wearing a kevlar vest and came out of it with a huge bruise from the impact. Shit.
In First Blood, Sly Stallone insisted on performing his own stunts, which included falling off a cliff into a group of trees. The yelp of pain you hear in the scene is very, very real. Stallone broke multiple ribs.
BLADE RUNNER, INTO A CAR WINDOW
Pris the ‘basic pleasure model’ meets J.F. Sebastian for the first time in this scene and runs off terrified. Daryl Hannah actually slipped on the wet ground and fell into the car window by accident, it wasn’t written into the script. Despite a chipped elbow and suffered multiple cuts, but she kept on acting.
Quentin Tarantino strangled Diane Kruger in this scene where her character is being killed by Christophe Waltz’s. Tarantino decided he wanted her reaction to look as real as possible, so with Kruger’s consent, he actually cut off her air supply himself – the hands you see around her neck are his. Her terror in the shot is very real.
Jamie Campbell Bower messed up his ankle after he did a jump stunt out a window after stealing the “elder Wand’ in Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 1. The accident happened off screen, but it’s just another example of actors suffering for their art.
There you have it, being an actor seems to be more than mugging for the camera. Nicely done folks.
