Baz Luhrman’s adaptation of Romeo and Juliet is 20 years old. Feeling old yet?
The film made stars out of its two leads Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes and opened up a new generation to the works of Shakespeare… sort of.
Most remember this adaptation as the film DiCaprio and Danes broke out, but it’s easy to forget that Romeo + Juliet film also boasted a large supporting cast made up of some well-established acting talent.
Here we take a look back at seven actors you probably forgot were in Baz Luhrman’s Romeo + Juliet.
John Leguizamo – Tybalt
Leguizamo is an actor that’s done everything. You’ll most likely remember him as Luigi from Super Mario Bros or as the voice of Scrat in the Ice Age movies. More recently, he can be seen as a main villain on Netflix’s Bloodline. He also had supporting roles in the likes of Die Hard 2, The Lincoln Lawyer and another Baz Luhrman epic, Moulin Rouge!
Harold Perrineau – Mercutio
Michael Dawson from Lost! Harold Perrineau is well known for his part in JJ Abrams’s classic series, but in addition to that he also had prominent roles on the TV shows Oz, Blade: The Series, Sons of Anarchy and the short-lived but well-received Constantine.
Pete Postlethwaite – Father Laurence
You might have seen the late Pete Postlethwaite (he died back in 2011) in supporting roles in the likes of Alien 3, The Usual Suspects and Inception in his illustrious career. He was also Father Brennan in the 2006 remake of The Omen, where he meets a similar fate to Patrick Troughton in the 1976 original…
Paul Rudd – Dave Paris
Paul Rudd has been a prolific star for decades – now he’s hit the big time thanks to Marvel’s Ant-Man. After his breakout success as Mike, Phoebe’s boyfriend on Friends, Rudd has gone on to have starring roles in a whole host of comedies including Anchorman, Role Models and I Love You Man.
Miriam Margolyes – Nurse
British stage and screen veteran Miriam Margolyes has cropped up in the Harry Potter film series as Professor Sprout and provided voices for the likes of Babe, James and the Giant Peach and Happy Feet. You may also recall her appearances in Blackadder back in the 80s.
Jamie Kennedy – Sampson
Jamie Kennedy’s big screen career has been a little spotty to say the least. He boasts starring roles in the likes of Son of the Mask (the unwanted sequel to the 1994 Jim Carrey flick) and Malibu’s Most Wanted, neither of which we’d advise you to check out. He did, however, also appear as Randy in Scream and he also had a supporting role in the George Clooney-starring Three Kings.
Christina Pickles – Caroline Montague
Pickles is probably most recognisable from playing Ross and Monica’s mum on Friends but she also had a starring role on the 1980’s medical drama St. Elsewhere. You might have also seen her crop up in The Wedding Singer alongside Adam Sandler and co.
